Senate repeals ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”

It’s about time! On Saturday, the lameduck Senate voted 65-31 to repeal the military’s ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy. Pending President Obama’s signature, the repeal will eventually allow gay and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces without punishment.

In the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, would like recognize the six Republican Senators who broke party lines to vote in favor of H.R. 2965: Sen. Scott Brown (MA), Sen. Susan Collins (ME), Sen. Mark Kirk (IL), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK), Sen. Olympia Snowe (ME), and Sen. George Voinovich (OH). (Of course, not all the Republican Senators voted for the bill because they support repealing DADT.)

Note how Sen. Collins, who cast the deciding vote against DADT’s repeal in September, has performed an about-face and is now boasting of her leadership in the “effort to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
