The decision to drop out came as Santorum was struggling to regain momentum after Mitt Romney won most of the key primary states in March.

According to the Associated Press, Romney leads the GOP field with 661 delegates while Santorum trails with 285 delegates. Romney’s delegate lead appears to be insurmountable even if Santorum is able to win every contest between now and the Republican convention in August.

With Santorum out of the way, Romney’s status as the Republican presidential nominee is all but decided.

“Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran,” Romney said in a statement. “He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation.  We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.”
