First Lady Michelle Obama, whose popularity remains high even as President Barack Obama’s approval ratings have dropped, is expected to talk about her husband’s character and the values that drive the President’s policies and decisions, especially those that help the middle class. The First Lady and other speakers will highlight the tough political choices the President has made during his first term, casting Obama as someone who puts what’s best for the country ahead of politics – in contrast to Mitt Romney’s weathervane politics.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who succeeded Mitt Romney in 2006, will likely talk about the impacts of Romney’s economic policies on families in Massachusetts, setting up the contrast between Romney-Ryan’s “top-down” economics that “crashed the economy and crushed the middle class” and the President’s approach to build a strong, sustainable economy by restoring economic security to the middle class and providing opportunities to those willing to work hard and play by the rules.

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, who’s frequently compared to Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by the news media, will be tonight’s headline speaker. Castro is expected to talk about his personal story in the land of opportunity and present a forward-looking view on how the Democratic Party can help others achieve their ‘American dream.’

Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland’s remarks will likely focus on the President’s decision to rescue the American auto industry – a decision that was criticized by Mitt Romney. Strickland may talk about the political and economic context behind the President’s decision and how the auto rescue impacted people in Ohio.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who served as President Obama’s chief of staff from 2009 – 2010, is expected to talk about challenges Obama faced during his first few years in office and what he did to help turn the economy around, reform the health care system to rein in out-of-control costs, and responsibly end the war in Iraq.

Tammy Duckworth, former Iraq War veteran and double amputee who’s running to replace GOP Rep. Joe Walsh in Illinois’ 8th congressional district, will probably focus her remarks on what the Obama administration has done and will do to help veterans.
