Transcript: Statements by Maret Tsarnaev on the Boston Marathon bombing suspects – April 19, 2013

Partial transcript of statements by Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev – the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, in Toronto, Canada on April 19, 2013:

Question:
How old are they?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
Tamerlan was born in 1986 in October. Dzhokhar was born 23rd of July 1993. He was born in Chechnya. Was not lucky but still…

As I said, parents are worrying somebody – some reporter said to me this morning, “Do you know last report when Tamerlan was circled, he was wearing explosives?” I said, “Did you see with your own eyes Tamerlan – ID’ed already that it is Tamerlan – that he was standing there with explosives?” You know, I cannot take this kind of information lightly. What century are we living in? We need evidence. Otherwise, you can go and shoot, you know, anybody like a chicken on the street and say that, you know, he did this or he did that. Not for me. I need evidence and then come and see my reaction.

If it’s them – with this life today, all the pictures are in computer. We don’t carry now those, you know, picture of loved ones. It’s in computer. Computer room – pictures disappear.

Question:
[Inaudible]

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
No, I mean, for example – [overlapping audio]

…Guys, you have to have a motive first. Something that drive you do some actions. You know, they cannot go crazy or mad or sick or psychic [sic] just for one day.

As far as I know them, they were fine, in good health, in good mind. What happened?

Question:
If your nephews were set up – that’s what you and Anzor seem to claim – why would they even be set up? What’s the motive there?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
Let me say this: There we can know how many bombings went off in Russia…That was in the time when every action that was committed around Russia also was blamed on Chechens and then people – ordinary people on the street discovered the plot that it was Russian investigation agency or some unknown department that is not even officially known there putting those [incomprehensible audio]…to be ready to blow that building off.

So what do you think I would believe easily anything that your government, my government, their government would throw me into my face? No, I’m not at that stage. No. Evidence. Evidence.

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
Evidence is needed. Convince us. You don’t have anything. Show me. Like it’s pathetic…Where’s the guy who showed me just picture? …Circle face. How much can that tell you? Show me the picture where he’s putting this bag that this bag is the one that went off and like this with Tamerlan or Dzhokar’s face. Show that to me. At least show that to me. And then maybe I question more why, you know, yes he did this.

Then I will try to find out why did he do it. Why? For what reason? Tamerlan has his daughter about the age of that little boy that died there. Why would he think that, you know, his daughter’s life would cost more or be more meaningful than this boy’s life?

Evidence, guys, show me evidence! I don’t trust FBI. I don’t trust any agencies. Show me evidence.

Evidence. There’s a lot of materials that is shown those twin buildings went off with the suspicion of who?

Question:
What exactly were your nephews doing in Boston? Were they in school? Were they working?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
They were living there since 2002 all together. They were going to school certainly. They were involved in sports. Dzhokhar was involved in…wrestling. Tamerlan was in boxing. He won few championships. Heavyweight though. You know, with his age and heavyweight always would have contestants who are older.

Question:
Were they working now?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
He was working. He was working – Tamerlan was working at stores – different stores. He at some point was delivering pizza as well.

Dzhokhar was studying and I know that he was studying at school.

Question:
Do you know what it was?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
I don’t know the name. As I said, their mother likes to exaggerate sometimes say things that are not true about them. Like, you know, to make them good, great in front of the family members who are expecting a lot from them.

Like I was expecting a lot from them. My brother, younger brother Ruslan, was expecting a lot from them because they have potential.

Question:
And are you working in Canada now? Are you still a lawyer here?

Maret Tsarnaev, aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
I am – I did my LLM here. I’m not practicing law. I am getting ready for my exams.

But, you know, lately I feel like I want – I’m attracted to my family. I want to go back…
