Transcript: Sen. Chuck Schumer on the Senate’s failure to pass the Toomey-Manchin gun legislation

Partial transcript of remarks by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on the failure to pass the gun legislation (S. 649). The press briefing was held on April 17, 2013:

Let me salute all of my colleagues, particularly Joe Manchin.

Let me salute the families who have lit a candle instead of cursing the darkness. That is a hard, hard thing to do when you go through what they went through – you don’t want to get out of bed let alone come down here and argue truth to power…It will not be forgotten and it will not be unhelpful; it will be helpful.

And let me say this: Today, fear, mistruth, ruth political force won out over what is right, and America will be a less safe place because of it.

But I say to the families, I say to the American people so many of whom just can’t understand what’s happening here in this capital: Don’t give up faith.

Things change quickly here in Washington. They’ve changed for gay marriage. They’re changing for immigration. And they will change for gun safety sooner than you think.

We will win this fight. When the American people is on our side, when right is on our side, it takes a long time for these wheels of democracy to grind forward but they will.

And you families – all of you from Newtown, Columbine, and all the other tragedies, and the families who have come because their little son was killed on a street corner – one son doesn’t get noticed – one but thousands when you add them up – to all of you, your actions here will give us the strength, the courage, and the rectitude to win this fight. We will not rest until we do.
