Transcript: Sen. Joe Manchin on the Senate’s failure to pass the Toomey-Manchin gun legislation

Partial transcript of remarks by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) on the failure to pass the gun legislation (S. 649). The press briefing was held on April 17, 2013:

Let me just thank Harry [Reid] and all of our colleagues that voted in support of this. And we are not giving up. Harry has said that this is not over and I assure you it’s not over.

I’m proud of all of my West Virginia constituents who so supported me through this. We took time to talk to them. This is the most reasonable approach.

I thank my colleague, Pat Toomey. I thank Mark Kirk. And I thank my friend, Chuck Schumer. Everybody came together to try to make this the most balanced approach that we possibly can while never forgetting the sacrifices that have been for us to be here today.

I just want to commit to the families. I want everyone of you all to know – every family of violence – if we can muster enough courage – just one ounce of the courage they have shown as they come here to explain to us…they just want a common sense approach preventing criminals and preventing people who are mentally ill and mentally unstable or found so by a court not to be able to buy a gun at a gun show, at a gun store, or online. That’s just common sense. That’s American. It’s not Democrat or Republican. That’s just American common sense. And we’re not going to quit until we’re able to achieve that.

God bless you. Thank you.
