Transcript: Sen. Patty Murray on the Senate’s failure to pass the Toomey-Manchin gun legislation

Partial transcript of remarks by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) on the failure to pass the gun legislation (S. 649). The press briefing was held on April 17, 2013:

It’s such a disappointing and unbelievable today.

And I want to echo Sen. [Chuck] Schumer in thanking the tremendous families who are behind us today for their courage and to remind them that you have made a difference.

Today is disappointing but the future is what we are focused on and I want to thank Sen. [Harry] Reid for saying this is not done.

The courage of Sen. [Joe] Manchin has been incredible and Sen. [Pat] Toomey who has stepped forward to step up to this issue. There will be others that follow.

But it makes no sense today…that it is easier to get an assault weapon or a gun than it is to get an airplane ticket. Makes no sense to me as a mother or grandmother or as a United States Senator.

No one should go through what these families have gone through, and I salute them for their courage and I honor them and tell them we will not give up and neither should you.
