Transcript of press briefing remarks by California Gov. Jerry Brown announcing an agreement for the 2013-14 state budget on June 11, 2013:

I want to publicly acknowledge the work of the legislature. John Perez, Senate Pro Tem Steinberg who really provided some very important leadership and got something done that’s truly important – a balanced budget, a change in the formula that will strengthen local school districts, help poor kids, kids that have serious language barriers.

This is a real step forward.

California is focusing, in this budget, on improving the health care of the people of our state and improving education opportunity. That’s the big takeaway while we’re living in balance.

That’s not to say there aren’t risks out there as we take on the Medi-Cal expansion and the risks to the economy and how we project certain expenditures. That’s part of the given.

But by the rules of the road, over the last decade, this is not only a balanced budget, but it’s a real step forward.

So for the legislators who have to make these decisions – and many of them find some of the things that I want to do somewhat distasteful – I appreciate it. This is separation of powers but it’s working in a unified effort to serve the people of California in a credible way.

So I think that’s what we’ve got. It doesn’t mean there’s not work to do. Every year is another year, and lucky for you, you’ll have plenty of stories to write between now and then.

Thank you.
