Transcript: CA Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway’s remarks on the $315 million plan to expand prison capacity

Partial transcript of remarks by California Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway (R-Tulare) on expanding prison capacity to comply with the federal court order to reduce prison overcrowding. The press conference was held on Aug. 27, 2013:

It’s not every day you see all of us on stage here standing together on the same issue. That goes to show how important the issue is to all of us that we keep our community safe.

Despite what the court is asking, we cannot let dangerous criminals loose on our streets.

Earlier this year, Republicans sent a letter to the governor asking him to take several steps to avoid early release. I’d like to thank the governor for agree with some of those ideas to comply with the courts and protect Californians.

While today’s announcement helps address the prison crisis in the short-term, there’s still more work to be done to address the long-term impact of challenges to the criminal justice system.

Republicans will continue to work with the governor and the speaker to find sustainable solutions that will honor the courts’ demands while keeping Californians safe.

Today is an example of how the legislature works best when we work together.

Now, let’s get this passed as soon as possible. There’s no time to waste. The safety of our state depends on it.
