Transcript: CA Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff’s remarks on the $315 million plan to expand prison capacity

Partial transcript of remarks by California Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) on expanding prison capacity to comply with the federal court order to reduce prison overcrowding. The press conference was held on Aug. 27, 2013:

These are issues – there are issues, amazingly, where Republicans, Democrats agree, and this is just such an instance.

We must never forget that our number one responsibility is public safety – to keep California families safe from harm.

We cannot allow dangerous criminals loose on our streets to prey upon innocent men, women, and children.

The courts say we must reduce our prison population but there are waist o accomplish this without putting innocent families at risk.

I’d like to thank the governor for including Senate Republican ideas outlined earlier this year that would help avoid the chilling specter of early prison release.

However, clearly, more work needs to be done. Republicans and Democrats need to work together to solve the issues that brought about federal court intervention to begin with.

Senate Republicans remain committed to working with the governor and Democrats on solutions that make public safety our top priority.

We can show California real results, and most of all, we can take positive concrete steps to protect California families from harm.
