Transcript: California State Sheriffs’ Association’s statement on the $315 million plan to expand prison capacity

Partial transcript of remarks by Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal, Past President of the California State Sheriffs’ Association, on expanding prison capacity to comply with the federal court order to reduce prison overcrowding. The press conference was held on Aug. 27, 2013:

On behalf of the California State Sheriffs’ Association, we sheriffs support the governor’s plan and we’re very appreciative of all the efforts of his staff and also appreciate the support by leadership.

This is an important issue. Our concern was 10,000 prisoners would end up back on the street and we all realize many of those would commit new crimes and harm our communities.

The efforts by the governor will help protect our communities and we thank you for that, governor.
