Partial transcript of Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown (D-San Bernardino) Q&A with Drew Soderborg, Managing Principal Analyst, Corrections, Transportation, and Environment, at the Legislative Analyst’s Office, on the impacts of prison overcrowding on medical and mental health care in California’s prison system. The hearing before the Assembly Select Committee on Justice Reinvestment was held on Oct. 21, 2013:

Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown (D-San Bernardino):
I’d like to ask the question, first of all, what’s the percentage of inmates who are mentally ill? That’s number one. And number two, we’ve done away with most of our mental hospitals in California but were they properly staffed at the time that we had the need.

Drew Soderborg, Managing Principal Analyst, Corrections, Transportation, and Environment, at the Legislative Analyst’s Office:
On both of those questions, I’ll have to get back to you with specific answers. I’ll follow up – I can follow up with your staff to get you answers to those.
