Transcript: Press briefing remarks by Sen. Patty Murray on Senate filibuster rule changes – Nov. 21, 2013

Partial transcript of press briefing remarks by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington) on changes to the Senate’s filibuster rule on Nov. 21, 2013:

What is at issue here is our ability to have a functioning judiciary and government. And after unprecedented obstruction, the step that was taken today simply allows us to exercise our duty to confirm justices and presidential appointees.

Earlier this year, we thought we had reached a deal that would avoid this. In fact, the Majority Leader did everything he could to make it clear that he was open to compromise. But those on the other side of the aisle have shown time and time again that they refuse to allow up or down votes.

Nobody comes to this decision easily. I’ve served here in the majority and in the minority. But I have also been around long enough to know this is an entirely new level of obstruction.

We have seen an abuse of rules that has wasted time and that is intended to hurt our ability to work on behalf of the American people. This had to change.

We’ve given Republicans every opportunity to change this unprecedented strategy. Unfortunately, they gave us no choice but to act by refusing to give up or down votes on qualified candidates who the American people deserve to have in place.
