Transcript: Remarks by ACLU Deputy Legal Director Louise Melling on Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius

Partial transcript of remarks by Louise Melling, Deputy Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union, on Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius. The press briefing was held after the Supreme Court oral arguments on March 25, 2014:

Hi there. Louise Melling from the ACLU. As you know, we’re steadfast protectors of the First Amendment, of the right to religion.

We are heartened today to see the court concerned about the interests of women.

Heartened to see the court asking a lot of questions about the rights of third party that would be compromised.

Heartened and in total agreement with Verrilli’s statement, which is if the court goes the way that Hobby Lobby and Conestoga are asking them this would be the first time that a benefit for employees would be extinguished by its employer.

Religious freedom gives us our right to beliefs but it doesn’t give our right to impose them on others.

Thank you.
